Your Skills Are in High Demand!

As COVID-19 impacts more older adults in Arizona, the demand for certified caregivers and nursing assistants is higher than ever. As a healthcare professional, you not only help patients manage health needs and everyday tasks, you’ll help them cope with the emotional challenges of social isolation.

Frontline healthcare workers will remain in high demand for decades to come due to Arizona’s increasing older adult population. According to AARP, 10,000 Americans across the country turn 65 every day and will require the skilled care and support of trained healthcare professionals.

Certified caregivers and CNAs have similar job functions such as providing care and comfort to clients that cannot provide care for themselves.

One difference is the amount of training and required education; CNAs need a minimum 120 hours of training. Caregivers need a minimum of 62 training hours.

CNAs and Caregivers report to different boards. CNAs are under the Arizona State Board of Nursing (AZBN), while Caregivers are under the Nursing Care Institution Board (NCIA).

Another difference is the environment in which they work. CNAs typically work in hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and assisted living facilities. Caregivers typically work in assisted living and retirement communities where non-medical care is needed.

Another difference is the scope of work and supervision. Nursing Assistants perform tasks assigned by a nurse. The assigned tasks include taking vital signs and assisting with personal care. Personal care includes hygiene, grooming and helping with elimination needs. Caregivers also take vital signs and assist with personal care. Included with these duties are medication administration.

Most CNAs and Caregivers earn between $12-15 per hour. The average base salary for CNAs in Arizona is $14.91 per hour, and for Caregivers is $13.33 per hour (Indeed.com).

For Caregivers you can expect to find work in assisted living facilities and retirement communities. There are even in-home positions for caregivers.

CNAs can expect to work in hospitals, skilled nursing settings, rehabilitation settings, acute care settings, private home settings, private doctor offices and more. CNA is also a great start to a healthcare career path if you are interested in becoming a LPN or RN.
